Healthy Humility In Therapy: Avoiding the Pitfalls of Overconfidence

CE Hours 2

About this live event

As psychotherapy continues to evolve, clinicians are increasingly drawn to new and emerging modalities. While it is tempting to favor one approach—especially those touted as "evidence-based" like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)—this hyper-focus can come at a cost. Despite CBT's status as a gold standard, it is not without limitations, and overreliance on any single modality may restrict therapeutic effectiveness and responsiveness to diverse client needs. This presentation will explore the historical development of psychotherapy, tracing key shifts in theoretical frameworks and treatment approaches. We will examine the benefits and drawbacks of modality loyalty, especially in the context of contemporary clinical practice. Attendees will be encouraged to reflect on their own therapeutic preferences and consider the value of integrative and client-centered approaches in a rapidly changing mental health landscape.

Learning Objectives

  • An Overview of the Evolution of Psychotherapy
  • Understanding Treatment-Resistant Mental Health and SUD
  • Risks and Consequences of Overutilization of Therapy
