The Intersection of Ethics, Well-Being and Patient Care in Behavioral Health

CE Hours 2

About this live event

Although the global pandemic may no longer be at the forefront, the behavioral health industry still faces significant challenges, with many professionals grappling with uncertainty, anxiety, and what some describe as burnout or exhaustion. According to a Deloitte study (2018), 77% of professionals report experiencing burnout in their current roles. This exhaustion manifests in various ways, including emotional fatigue, physical burnout, and psychological depletion. For those working in the behavioral health field, the pressing question is: What impact does our own burnout have on the patients we serve? This training will not only cover fundamental ethical principles related to patient care, confidentiality, and the boundaries within the staff-patient relationship, but will also explore the ethical obligation to prioritize the well-being of ourselves and our teams. We will examine whether well-being should be regarded as an ethical expectation rather than merely a self-care recommendation. Ethics in the workplace are crucial for fostering a positive work environment, cultivating a culture of trust and respect, and enhancing productivity and motivation. Additionally, a strong ethical culture can play a significant role in preventing and resolving workplace conflicts.

Learning Objectives

  • Acquire an understanding of the importance of ethics to dual relationships, patient rights and professional responsibilities
  • Identify linkage between professional ethics and well-being
  • Explore implications for ethical practice related to practitioner self-care
  • Explore impaired well-being as a risk factor for compromised ethical decision-making
  • Identify the dynamic relationship between ethical factors within organizations and a culture of well-being
